The Addiction Institute of New York has an extensive training program for students and trainees from several different disciplines and different levels of training. Medical students, physicians, psychologists, social workers, counselors, nurses, nurse practitioners, and other allied health professionals become part of the Institute’s treatment teams as they evaluate and treat patients with substance use disorders and other addictions in a great variety of settings. Many of our senior staff hold faculty appointments at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Students and trainees learn about psychopathology, behavior modification techniques, group therapy techniques, motivational interviewing, self-help groups, and psychopharmacology specifically designed for this patient population. Individual tutorials, case conferences, grand rounds, and in-service training augment the educational experience.

The Addiction Institute of New York also offers one of the only addiction post-doctoral fellowships for psychologists in the country. Each year, two Fellows join our staff and receive intensive training in substance abuse treatment strategies in a variety of clinical settings. The training includes evaluation services, intensive outpatient, working with adolescents as well as college students, and women with children.

We are also well known as a training ground for those studying to become credentialed addiction counselors. Trainees work with one of our highly qualified counselors and learn through participating in the whole treatment process.
